10–12 June 2025 | Bergen, Norway & Online
The Horizon Europe-funded INNOAQUA project is pleased to support and co-organise the upcoming workshop on nutrient in aquaculture and fisheries, hosted by the European Sustainable Phosphorus Platform (ESPP) in collaboration with NORCE, UNEP uPcycle, and a wide network of international partners. This three-day hybrid event, taking place from 10 to 12 June 2025 in Bergen, Norway, is recognised as an EU Green Week Partner Event and will contribute to the development of a UNEP White Paper on phosphorus sustainability in aquaculture.
A Platform for Exchange on Sustainable Nutrient Strategies
With increasing global focus on the environmental footprint of aquaculture, this workshop brings together leading experts and stakeholders to address phosphorus flows, feed efficiency, sludge valorisation, and regulatory frameworks that influence nutrient recycling in the aquaculture sector. The programme features plenary talks, technical sessions, site visits, and a collaborative policy discussion facilitated by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).
The event will also spotlight INNOAQUA’s innovative work in using microalgae to valorise aquaculture wastewater, with contributions from several project partners including NORCE, STAM, and DTU.
Highlights from the Programme
10 June: The opening session sets the stage with perspectives from UNEP, the Aquaculture Advisory Council, and industry stakeholders from Norway, Chile, and Belgium. Two technical sessions will explore sustainable feed and circular business models.
11 June: Participants will dive into the role of phosphorus in the blue bioeconomy, regulatory pathways, and real-world applications of algae cultivation and sludge recycling. INNOAQUA will present key results from its pilot demonstrations and discuss their integration into circular food systems.
12 June: Optional site visits to the National Algaepilot Mongstad and a Lerøy Seafood fish farm with sludge recovery technology will provide hands-on insight into sustainable practices in aquaculture.
Site Visits
- National Algaepilot Mongstad: Discover how INNOAQUA is leveraging algae cultivation on aquaculture effluent to create sustainable feed and food products. The facility showcases scalable microalgae production and biorefinery applications.
- Lerøy Seafood (Skaftå): Explore an innovative sludge collection and biogas production system implemented in a fjord aquaculture setting.
