INNOAQUA Project Participates in the Regional Aquaculture Conference in Heraklion

Innoaqua- Regional Aquaculture Conference

On December 4-5, 2024, the INNOAQUA Project proudly participated in the Regional Aquaculture Conference organized by the FAO and GFCM in Heraklion, Greece. The conference brought together experts, stakeholders, and researchers from across the Mediterranean and Black Sea regions to share experiences, discuss challenges, and explore opportunities for collaboration in advancing sustainable aquaculture practices.

The event offered an inspiring platform for exchanging knowledge and building connections. It was a pleasure to engage with familiar faces and meet new colleagues, all united by a shared commitment to the future of aquaculture.

The INNOAQUA Project contributed to several key discussions during the conference:

  • AI and Digital Aquaculture Side Event: Together with Nikos Papandroulakis and Gaëtan Fabritius, INNOAQUA participated in a side event on artificial intelligence and digital aquaculture, moderated by Ferit RAD. Representing the Norwegian experience on behalf of Lars Ebbesson, the session highlighted how digital tools and AI can transform aquaculture practices for greater sustainability and efficiency.
  • Panel Discussion on Climate Change Mitigation: The project also participated in a panel discussion on mitigating the effects of climate change, alongside Javier Ojeda Gonzalez-PosadaNikos Papandroulakis, and Tanja Šegvić Bubić. Moderated by Erika M.D. Porporato, the panel explored strategies to adapt and innovate in the face of environmental challenges impacting aquaculture systems.

One of the recurring themes during the conference was the role of Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA) in sustainable aquaculture. Hearing IMTA referenced multiple times during discussions was particularly exciting for the INNOAQUA team. Together with the NORCE Norwegian Research Centre –coordinated ASTRAL Project, INNOAQUA is actively contributing to the study and development of IMTA practices, reinforcing their potential as a viable and sustainable production model.

The two-day conference was filled with valuable insights and thought-provoking discussions, providing a foundation for new ideas and future collaborations. With the information and connections gathered, INNOAQUA looks forward to continuing its mission of advancing sustainable aquaculture across Europe and beyond.
