INNOAQUA Showcased at the 1st International Congress on Algae Biotechnology in Lisbon

Innoaqua - International Congress on Algae Biotechnology

The INNOAQUA project was proudly represented by our partner A4F – Algae for Future at the 1st International Congress on Algae Biotechnology (ICAB), held from 9–11 April 2025 in Lisbon, Portugal.

Organised by PROALGA and GreenCoLab, ICAB brought together a vibrant community of researchers, entrepreneurs, policymakers, and industry leaders to explore the transformative potential of algae biotechnology across health, sustainability, and industrial applications.

A4F’s presentation of the INNOAQUA project focused on the integration of algae-based innovations within inland aquaculture systems, one of the project’s core ambitions. They introduced INNOAQUA’s holistic approach to sustainability—merging circular economy principlesadvanced digital tools, and high-value algae-derived productsto promote a resilient, eco-friendly aquaculture sector in Europe.

Throughout the three-day event, participants engaged with the latest scientific research and practical applications of algae in fields such as functional foodsbioplasticswaste recovery, and nutraceuticals. A4F’s involvement reinforced INNOAQUA’s role in this growing ecosystem and opened the door to future synergies with key actors in the algae value chain.

In addition to technical sessions, the congress offered enriching experiences, including a guided visit to Allmicroalgae, a gastronomic showcase of algae-based products from the Algae Vertical project, and dedicated networking and cultural moments that encouraged cross-sector collaboration.

The online event was co-organised by project partners A4F – Algae for Future, SEA EIGHT, and INESC TEC, and aimed to foster discussion on innovative pathways towards more sustainable aquaculture systems in Europe.
