Innoaqua - Algae-Based Innovation for Next Level Combined Aquaculture Production

The INNOAQUA Project is pleased to promote the upcoming online event “Algae-based innovation for next level combined aquaculture production”, organised by project partner European Aquaculture Society in collaboration with leading international research and innovation partners.

This short, focused online event will showcase combined plant and animal aquaculture production technologies, highlighting Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA) and Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS) that integrate macro- and microalgae. The session will present concrete examples of systems already operating at pilot or near full-scale production in Europe and Southeast Asia, followed by an expert panel discussion and live audience Q&A .

Event details

  • Date: Wednesday, 11 February 2026
  • Time: 08:30–11:30 CET (Brussels time)
  • Format: Online (Microsoft Teams)

Register here.

Over three hours, participants will gain insights into:

  • Proven configurations for coupling algae and animal production in land- and sea-based IMTA systems
  • Performance aspects including costs, biosecurity, climate resilience, and environmental outcomes
  • Opportunities and challenges for scaling up integrated aquaculture solutions
  • Collaboration pathways across species, production methods, and food and non-food end-products .

The session will be moderated by Dorinde Kleinegris (NORCE Research, Norway) and Natrah Ikhsan (ALBIC Group, Universiti Putra Malaysia), with a panel discussion and live Q&A moderated by Patrick Sorgeloos.

Speakers will present case studies ranging from seaweed cultivation and land-based IMTA pilots to climate-resilient shrimp and salmon production systems, drawing lessons from diverse geographic and production contexts across Europe and Southeast Asia .

The event is aimed at aquaculture operators, algae producers, feed and ingredient developers, technology providers, researchers, investors, and policymakers seeking scalable and sustainable solutions for the future of aquaculture.

Through its involvement in INNOAQUA, the consortium continues to support knowledge exchange and international collaboration on algae-based innovations that enhance sustainability, circularity, and resilience in aquaculture systems.
