The INNOAQUA project, represented by project coordinator NORCE Norwegian Research Centre, took part in the Young Algaeneers Symposium (YAS2025), held in Almería, Spain, from June 3 to 6, 2025. The event gathered young scientists, researchers, and industry representatives from across the world to exchange ideas and explore innovative developments in both the microalgae and seaweed sectors.
A Conference by and for Young Algae Researchers
The Young Algaeneers Symposium is a unique, community-driven event designed specifically for early-career researchers in the field of algal biotechnology. By combining scientific exchange with professional networking, the symposium creates a dynamic platform where young researchers can interact directly with academic leaders, industry experts, and fellow innovators shaping the future of algae-based technologies.

Set in the Mediterranean city of Almería, YAS2025 benefited from the region’s vibrant research ecosystem and strong industrial ties. The University of Almería (UAL) is internationally recognised for its pioneering work in algae cultivation and bioprocessing, while local biotech companies continue to develop cutting-edge microalgae-based applications, especially in agriculture. Participants also had the opportunity to tour local algae facilities and greenhouses, discovering firsthand how research meets real-world sustainability.
YAS2025 encouraged participants to present their research, engage in open discussions, and propose new session topics, ensuring a truly collaborative environment. The symposium opened with an informal networking event that allowed attendees to connect, share ideas, and form partnerships. Throughout the conference, sessions focused on current trends, emerging challenges, and cross-disciplinary solutions in the field of algal research.
INNOAQUA’s participation in YAS2025 highlights its commitment to empowering the next generation of scientists and innovators in the algae sector. NORCE, representing the consortium, shared the project’s approach to advancing sustainable aquaculture systems and developing algae-based products for food and feed applications. By engaging with young researchers, INNOAQUA aims to foster new collaborations and support knowledge transfer between academia and industry.
