From 19 to 21 October 2026, the life cycle assessment community meets in Bruges, Belgium, for the SETAC Europe 27th LCA Symposium, under the theme “Designing Tomorrow: Advancing Life Cycle Approaches for European Sustainability Initiatives”. INNOAQUA will be part of the programme through a presentation by project partner Sustainn.
A Session on Algae and Emerging Bio-Based Systems
On Tuesday 20 October, the session “Advancing and Aligning Life Cycle Approaches for Emerging Bio-Based Systems: Lessons from Algae and Beyond” will look at how life cycle assessment can keep pace with value chains that are still taking shape, using algae systems, with their early-stage technologies, multiple products and links to the circular economy, as a test case for other bio-based sectors.
INNOAQUA’s Approach to Circularity and Sustainability
At 11:55, Carlos León Perfecto from Sustainn will present “Towards Integrated Life Cycle Sustainability and Circularity Assessment for Emerging Aquaculture Systems: Insights from INNOAQUA”. The talk introduces the framework developed within INNOAQUA to assess the sustainability and circularity of innovations ranging from algae-based ingredients to the valorisation of fish by-products. One of its key messages is that circularity works best as a complementary dimension of life cycle sustainability assessment, since circularity indicators do not add up in a simple way and more circular processes can sometimes require more energy.

After sharing this work with the aquaculture community at Aquaculture Europe 2026 in Ljubljana, Sustainn now brings it to life cycle assessment specialists working on similar challenges across bio-based sectors.
