SAFE–AWARE–INNOAQUA Summer School 2026: Session 1 Explores Circular Innovation in Aquaculture

Safe-Aware-Innoaqua - Summer School 2026

The SAFE–AWARE–INNOAQUA Summer School 2026 kicked off on 15 June with its first session, “Innovations I – From Waste to Value in Aquaculture”. Bringing together participants from across the aquaculture and research communities, the session explored practical examples of how circular bioeconomy approaches can transform waste streams into valuable resources and support more sustainable production systems.

Chaired by Piotr Eljasik (West Pomeranian University of Technology, SAFE), the session featured contributions from researchers and industry representatives working on innovative solutions for circular aquaculture. Topics ranged from freshwater aquaculture waste valorisation and mealworms in the circular bioeconomy to circular water reuse, food safety in aquaponic systems and a regenerative bioeconomy case study from Chile.

Speakers included Remigiusz Panicz (West Pomeranian University of Technology), Pablo Ramirez (Tebrio), Cristina Pablos Carro (Universidad Rey Juan Carlos), Marta López Cabo (Marine Research Institute, Vigo) and Rodrigo Morales Vera (Universidad Católica del Maule), who shared examples of how circular approaches can improve resource efficiency while creating new value streams for the aquaculture sector.

The session was a great success, attracting more than 140 participants from across the aquaculture, research and innovation communities. The presentations generated lively discussions and showcased practical examples of how circular bioeconomy approaches can help address sustainability challenges in aquaculture.
