The INNOAQUA project, represented by project coordinator NORCE Norwegian Research Centre, participated in the 21st International Conference on Renewable Resources and Biorefineries (RRB2025), held in Turku, Finland, from June 2 to 4, 2025. The event brought together over 250 specialists from academia, industry, and policy to explore new frontiers in the bioeconomy and foster collaboration across Europe.
A Hub for Bioeconomy and Green Innovation
The RRB Conference is widely recognized as one of the leading European platforms in the fields of renewable resources, biorefineries, and green chemistry. This year’s edition, hosted at the Turku City Theatre, was organized in collaboration between the University of Turku, Åbo Akademi University, and Ghent University. Finland’s reputation for sustainability and circular innovation made Turku the ideal venue for bringing together thought leaders and innovators from across the globe.
During the three-day event, participants explored advancements in biomass pretreatment, biobased materials, algal technologies, marine applications, and thermochemical processes. The program included keynote lectures, technical sessions, poster presentations, and interactive networking moments fostering cross-sectoral dialogue. The conference’s multidisciplinary approach highlighted how renewable resources can drive Europe’s green transition while promoting scientific excellence and industrial applicability.
As part of its mission to advance sustainable aquaculture and algae-based solutions, INNOAQUA presented its innovative approach to valorising algae for high-value food applications, circular biorefinery systems, and environmental benefits. NORCE, as project coordinator, shared insights into how the project is paving the way for integrating aquaculture, biotechnology, and circularity to support the EU Farm-to-Fork strategy.
The RRB2025 conference reaffirmed Europe’s strong commitment to building a sustainable, bio-based economy through science, collaboration, and innovation. INNOAQUA’s participation underscored the importance of integrating marine and freshwater resources into the bioeconomy framework and demonstrated the project’s contribution to achieving EU Green Deal objectives.
