The INNOAQUA project was showcased at Aquaculture 2025, the world’s largest aquaculture conference, held in New Orleans, Louisiana (USA), on March 8, 2025. The European Aquaculture Society (EAS), a key partner in the project, presented INNOAQUA in the Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA) session, highlighting its innovative approach to sustainable aquaculture.
As global food systems grapple with challenges arising from population growth and environmental constraints, aquaculture continues to present itself as a vital solution. To highlight groundbreaking developments in this field, the European Aquaculture Society (EAS) organized an EAStalk webinar on 11 February 2025 titled "INNOAQUA approach coupling algae & fish production to produce high-value food products." This event provided an insightful overview of the EU-funded INNOAQUA project, which has been running for 18 months and is dedicated to innovative algae integration in sustainable aquaculture practices.
Within the INNOAQUA project, our project partner Leitat plays a pivotal role in the production of innovative Fish Protein Hydrolysates (FPHs) from fish processing by-products. These FPHs are used for the development of novel seafood and plant-based food formulations. Specifically, Leitat is demonstrating pre-industrial scale processes for protein extraction from alternative sources, contributing to the valorization of fish processing waste.
INESC TEC, a partner in the INNOAQUA project, participated in the XXVIII Encontro Galego-Português de Química, held in Galicia, Spain, from November 13 to 15, 2024. This event, a key meeting point for the Portuguese and Galician scientific communities, focuses on advancing collaboration and knowledge exchange in the field of chemistry and its applications across various industries.
